Located in the center of Portugal, the Tagus Wine Region has been recognized since the Middle Ages as one of the main wine regions of Portugal.

This region extends along the two banks of the Tagus River, from which it inherited its name.

The Region has a moderate climate. The vineyard plantations are aligned. The traditional driving system is the low vineyard, although the introduction of vintage mechanics has introduced changes, especially in the height of the vineyard.

The economic and social importance that the vineyard culture plays in Ribatejo is unquestionable!

This fertile region, once with high yields that supplied the domestic market and colonies in Africa, produces quality white and red wines at an extremely competitive price. Diversity of soils and climates combined with large wine farms with low production costs are the main characteristics of Ribatejo.

The Denomination of Origin of Ribatejo presents six sub-regions (Almeirim, Cartaxo, Chamusca, Coruche, Santarém and Tomar). The soils vary depending on the proximity of the river. The field or lezíria are very productive zones that are located by the river. Due to flooding of the Tagus it is common that the vineyards of the area are sometimes completely submerged. In the right bank of the Tagus, after the solos next to the river, the zone of the neighborhood is located.

Ribatejo was known for producing large quantities of wine that supplied Lisbon, the wine was of poor quality and was sold in bulk. Over the past 15 years, the region has undergone significant changes. Many vines were transferred from the field to the poor soils of the moor and the neighborhood: production declined, but quality improved significantly.

The traditional varieties of the region are (Trincadeira or Castelão) but also of other noble varieties, like the Touriga Nacional, Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. The most planted white grape variety in the region is Fernão Pires, being practically indispensable in the production of white Ribatejanos. Sometimes it is crowded with other regional varieties such as Arinto, Talia, Trincadeira das Pratas, Vital or the international Chardonnay.

Regardless of the DOC or Regional designation, the Ribatejo terroir sits in any region wine: very fruity whites and tropical or floral aromas and young reds, aromatic and soft tannins.

There are 3 distinct wine-growing areas known as "THE FIELD", "THE BAIRRO" and "THE CHARNECA".

The FIELD, with its extensive plains, adjacent to the Tagus River, also known as LEZÍRIA DO TEJO, subject to periodic flooding, which causes some disturbances, are also responsible for the high fertility indexes that alluvial soils possess, par excellence the area of ??white wines, where the castes Fernão Pires, Arinto and Verdelho predominate.

Located between the Tagus Valley and the foothills of the Porto de Mós, Candeeiros and Montejunto massifs, with clay-limestone soils in soft waves, it is the ideal area for the red varieties, namely Touriga Nacional, Trincadeira and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The CHARNECA, located south of the Campus, on the left bank of the Tagus River, with sandy and moderately fertile soils, if on the one hand it has yields below the average of the Region, on the other hand it induces a thinning of both white wines and red wines.
