The Denomination of Origin Beira Interior was created on November 2, 1999, as a result of the agglutination of the regions of Castelo Rodrigo, Cova da Beira and Pinhel, which have since become sub-regions. It has a historical wine history that goes back to the foundation of Portuguese nationality, is located in the central interior of Portugal, has about 16 000 hectares of vineyards and a large variety of grape varieties. Among the white wines are Syria, Fonte Cal, Malvasia, Rabo de Ovelha and Arinto, and in Tintas, Rufete, Bastardo, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz.

The wines are influenced by the mountain, surrounded by the Estrela, Marofa and Malcata mountains and by the altitude with variations between 400 and 700 meters. The soils are mainly of granite origin, the rest being essentially of schist origin. The climate of the region is very harsh, with negative temperatures in the winter and very hot and dry summers.

White wines of great aromatic exuberance and a lot of freshness, and in the reds, wines with complex aromas of wild fruits and spices, allied to a marked freshness.

The regions of Beira Interior include Beira Baixa and Beira Alta. It is a region that produces very distinct wines fruit of the diverse climates in each Távora-Varosa and Lafões subregion.

Cooperative wineries produce almost all the wine in the region, although more and more small and medium-sized wine producers appear on the market.

Lafões is a small region in the north of Dão with few producers. In spite of this, the red wines of the region are especially recognized for their luminosity while whites are characterized by high acidity. The Amaral and Jaen grape varieties are the most used in the production of red wine, while the Arinto, Cercial and Rabo de Ovelha varieties are preferred in the production of white wine.

Távora-Varosa is a region of small size, however very relevant in the production of sparkling wines. The white grape varieties are predominant in the region (Malvasia Fina, Cerceal, Gouveio, Chardonnay). The most planted red grape varieties are Touriga Francesa, Tinta Barroca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Pinot Noir. Although the production of the region is led by sparkling wines, fresh whites and soft reds are also produced.
