The Barca Velha is one of the most elegant and appreciated wines of the present time. With a great power of guard, Douro wine has won its place with unique characteristics.
Although the brand was born in the early 50's, the history of Barca Velha wine is much older than we imagine, it dates back to the 19th century and to the affection and entrepreneurship of D. Antônia Adelaide Ferreira, also known as "A Ferreirinha" simply for the his tenderness and great personality, at the time Dona Antónia, managed to manage about dozens of farms, among the most famous in the region, was also the largest exporter of wines in the region of Porto.
He was born in 1811, the daughter of a wine merchant, José Bernardo Ferreira, and his wife Margarida Rosa Gil. On October 22, 1834, he married his direct cousin. Antônio Bernardo Ferreira, they had two children. Later her husband goes to Paris and dies there, in 1844. She was widowed at age 33. It was at this time that he awakened the desire and vocation of empesaria.
Dona Antônia was supported by the administrator of Casa Ferreira - José da Silva Torres, who later became her second husband, Dona Antónia fought against problems in the region such as vine disease, phylloxera. A real warrior.
But it was only in 1952, when the winemaker of the Ferreira household, Mr. Fernando Nicolau de Almeida, assumed the position that the first harvest of this great wine was produced. No doubt that Mr. Nicolau de Almeida had a lot of creativity and knowledge to create this symbol of Portugal.
Although the first harvest was made in 1952, it was only released 8 years later after its aging process in the mid-1960s.
Currently the wine is vinified in the Quinta da Leda winery and the grapes are selected and selected by hand and later vinified and separated by lots for the ripening process.
The Barca Velha is produced with selected grapes from the Douro, and in its almost 160 hectares of vineyards are used, especially the Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta roriz and red dog grapes.
Touriga Nacional - Full-bodied grape, of strong color, intense flavor and very tannin is typical of the Douro region. Used in the manufacture of port wine, it is also a grape that produces very typical varieties.
Touriga Franca - Lighter than the national touriga, it is also part of the port wine recipe. It is also used in dried red table wines from the region.
Tinta Roriz- The most important grape quality in Spain, grown in the regions of Rioja and Ribeira del Duero. Usually mixed with garnacha and mazuelo. It produces a colored wine, with low acidity, little tannin and aging well in oak that gives it aromas of tobacco.
Tinta Cão - High quality grape from the Portuguese regions of Dão and Douro is recognized for its spicy character. In the Douro it is very used in the composition of Port wine.
