THE STORY
The newest representative of the sixth generation of the family that since the foundation presides over the destinies of José Maria da Fonseca, Domingos Soares Franco is, besides vice president, the company's main enologist. Domingos Soares Franco was the first Portuguese to obtain the Degree in Fermentation Sciences (Viticulture and Oenology) from the Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences of the University of California at Davis, USA. This fact is especially important since it has influenced him in the way he looks and sees the vineyard and wine, combining the history and tradition of a centenary company with the learning and innovation he has brought from one of the most advanced oenology schools in the world.
Although I subscribe to all the wines of José Maria da Fonseca, there are some that reserve for you as special. He called them Domingos Soares Franco - Private Collection. These wines result from the combination of three factors: his formation in Davis and the influence of his Father and his Uncle Anthony; The third is availability of the 650 hectares of vineyards of José Maria da Fonseca and the collection, unique in Portugal, of vine varieties planted there.
In 1998, Domingos Soares Franco decided that it was time to innovate the Moscatel de Setúbal. He then began 5 years of trials in which, with grapes from the same vineyard, he made wine with 4 different types of spirits: one neutral, one from the Cognac region, another from the Armagnac region and a fourth batch with 50% of these Last ones. After 5 years of tests, Armagnac prevailed, for its subtlety, freshness, complexity and harmony.

Enologist
Domingos Soares Franco, oenologist and vice-president, is the youngest of the two
Representatives of the sixth generation of the family that manages to José Maria da Fonseca. He studied in Davis, California and began working at José Maria da Fonseca in 1980. Since then, he has introduced numerous changes in the wines produced by this company, becoming one of the most innovative winemakers of the new generation in Portugal.
As an oenologist his first great influence was undoubtedly that of his Father, Fernando Soares Franco. António Porto Soares Franco, his uncle, the brand
Tremendously, a man of great vision, who among other outstanding achievements deserves to be recognized as the creator of Lancers, one of the most well known Portuguese wines in the world and the first international bestseller of José Maria da Fonseca.
